In the final league match of the season, Modbury travel to West Beach to play Sturt Lions at 3:00pm on Saturday 17 August.
Having celebrated winning the 2019 State League 1 title at home last week, the Jets will be expecting to finish the season strongly as they prepare for the Finals series. Sturt will be fighting hard to secure a top-two finish and will know that they need three points to achieve that. After grabbing an away draw in Round 11, the Lions will be hoping for a strong performance at home and to inflict just the second defeat of the season on the Premiers.
The Jets are closing out an extraordinary season. With just a single league defeat thus far, 54 points on the board, 54 goals scored and only 13 conceded, Modbury has already smashed records for the State League 1 competition since its inception in 2016. They will be motivated to finish their dominant 2019 season in style.
While Sturt are fighting for a top-two finish, the Jets are determined to round out the season strongly as they focus on the finals series, knowing that the outcome of this match will influence the identity of their opponent in the first round. Sturt has arguably been Modbury’s toughest opponent this season and will prove to be a real test of their championship credentials. The Lions will be desperate to prove themselves as they seek to bounce straight back up to the Premier League, alongside the Jets.
As a testament to the depth the club has had at its disposal this year, Modbury also celebrated its Reserves Premiership title last week. The Reserves will be determined to finish the season undefeated and will be expecting to claim their 100th goal of the season this week with leading scorer Rhys Turner, an unlikely hero in front of goal this year, hoping to extend his tally and wrap up both the league and club’s Golden Boot award.
Modbury and Sturt played an entertaining 2-2 draw at Smith Partners Stadium in Round 11. With the Jets 2-1 up, courtesy of goals to Josh Farrell and Kur Kur, the Lions gabbed a 91st minute equaliser to square the match.
